DIY Ombre Tablecloth

I made a simple ombre table cloth this weekend for my booth at Unique LA…here’s how!

Supplies

  • Light-colored fabric (canvas, linen, or even muslin work well)
  • Fabric dye

Steps

    1. Cut the fabric to fit the table. Since my table was up against a wall, I was able to cut the fabric into two pieces and only dye the front piece. I measured the front piece to fit the perimeter of the 2 sides and front only.
    2. Lay the fabric flat and roll it up on a cardboard tube (I use the ones leftover from wrapping paper) leaving several inches free on the bottom. Rolling it helps the fabric to dye more evenly and prevents creases.
    3. Follow the instructions on the package to prep the dye. I mixed teal and lime green dyes to get the perfect sea green color!
    4. Dip the rolled fabric into the dye. I put the first few inches in for about an hour (I suspended the roll over the dye by pinching it between two chair backs- nothing fancy!). I dipped the next few inches in for around 30 minutes and the next few inches in for 10 to create an ombre effect.
    5. Rise the fabric with cold water and hang to dry.
    6. Steam iron on a flat surface and do a simple stitch to hem the bottom. You could also use a fabric blocker to prevent fraying instead.
    7. Use small clips to pin up the sides when covering the table and done!

It’s so hard to find a tablecloth that fits tables perfectly, especially when you want it to extend all the way to the floor. Since the tablecloth is in two pieces, it’s really nice that there’s some flexibility in adjusting the length. This was a simple way to customize my space and make sure I could secretly store things underneath.
